168 HUSSEY, Anna Maria : Illustrations of British mycology, containing figures and descriptions of the funguses of interest and novelty indigenous to Britain. London: Reeve brothers 1847-1855. 2 vols. 140 hand-coloured lith. plates by A. M. Hussey, F. Reed, M. J. B. Folio

Volbracht 944; Stafleu 3159; Krieger 111; Nissen 961 - not in the Schliemann-Catalogue by Uellner. - Very rare and beautiful. This is the only great mushroom-iconography from the hand of a woman, with fine and elegant handcoloured lithographs. (Cf. VOLBRACHT, Christian: Oft im Schatten der Männer - Frauen als Malerinnen von Pilzen. Ex Zeitschrift für Mykologie 88 (2), 2022.) Anna Maria Hussey was a Victorian scientific illustrator from Buckinghamshire, who published this book as Mrs T. J. Hussey - the initials and name of her husband. She knew the nearby living Charles Darwin and was corresponding with the leading mycologist of her time in England, Miles Joseph Berkeley. - The beautiful illustrations show mushrooms in their natural environment. Some of the plates are drawn by Berkeley, the others by Hussey and F(rances) Reed, her younger sister. The much rarer second volume was published posthumously, as Hussey's died in 1853 at the age of 48. Interesting text, written by a real mushroom-lover, with descriptions, many references to the older literature, personal observations, explanation of the use of fungi etc. Harshly, Hussey criticizes Paulets experimentations on dogs with Amanita phalloides.

A beautiful copy in an elegant binding of Manderson in Brighton: Full red chagrin-leather, richely decorated, gilt edges, raised bands. Old owner inscription of on fly-leaves, with the small mycological Ex libris of Jacques et Hélène Bon. Bound in contemporrary leather, gilt titles on spines, edges gilt. 29,5 x 24 cm
