Felice Fontana (1730-1805), an Italian abbot, physician and naturalist, discovered that rust was a parasitic plant and not due to insects - the same conclusion was made the same year by Giovanni Targioni-Tozzetti in Florence. The beautiful plate depicts the urediniospores and teliospores of Puccinia graminis. Old signature of Jacques H. J. van de Laar on title, the folded plate a bit creased in middle.
