James Sowerby (1757-1822) was a British botanical artist. He was trained at the Royal Academy and contributed from 1777-1822 to many British botanical publications. This work was intended as a supplement to English Botany, a work with 2500 hand-coloured plates published together with J. E. Smith, which included algae and lichens, but no fungi. Sowerby also prepared and exhibited 200 models of fungi. This is a nice and complete set of this classic, with the very rare supplement. Modern ex-libris Marcus Crahan. Small hole on plate 120.
