 | 29 BORCH, Michael Johann Graf von : Lettres sur les truffes du Piémont écrites par Mr. le Comte de Borch en 1780. À Milan: chez les frères Reycends 1780 p (i-ii), iii-viii, (3), 4-51, (52, err.): 3 plates by the author, printed in colours by Louis Gautier d'Agoty Volbracht 208; Uellner 154; Vicaire 104; Simon 450; Oberlé 721; Pritzel 996. - A very rare classic work on the white truffles from Italy. Count De Borch (1753 - 1811), was a Polish naturalist and traveller. He praises the "natural superiority" of the white truffles from Piemont and proposes how they should be cultivated. The book relates many details about truffle-hunting in a period when "truffle-mania" at the royal courts and noble-houses in Europe was at its peak. Of special interest are the plates, designed by Borch and printed in colours by Louis d'Agoty, a son of the famous French engraver Jacques-Fabien Gautier d'Agoty. They depict truffles and truffle-flies. This first edition of the book exists in several variants: with one ore two titlepages with slight typographical differences, further with the errata printed on page (52) or on a separate leaf at the end of the book. Very good copy, here and there very few light spots. The folded plates have been opened and bound in double-paged. 19th century half-leather with marbled boards and gilt title on spine. (22 x 14,5 cm)
