August Johann Georg Carl Batsch (1761-1802) was professor for botany at Jena and director of the Physikalische Gesellschaft. First part dedicated to Herzog Carl August von Sachsen, the second to the great poet and naturalist Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. The finely coloured plates were drawn by Batsch, then engraved and coloured by J. Capieux. They depict 232 species, many new, with detailed description and places. Text in columns in Latin and German.
The copy has, in the margins of a large number of pages and on the plates, annotations in ink by the hand of an English mycologist from the beginning of the 19th century, J. Hawkins Chaceley, Worcestershire. There is also, after the title page of the first part, a folded manuscript table referring to the numbers of the figures engraved by Capieux. Beautiful copy in contemporary half-leather binding, decorated spine, title label in black morocco. Cracked hinges. 24,3 x 20,5 cm
